As you celebrate with your loved ones, do take time to use these prayers for Valentine’s Day. There are many people that we can remember in our prayers during this celebration, from our husbands, wives or partners, to our children, and all those we love. But we can also pray for those who find Valentine’s Day hard for so many reasons.

“We love because he first loved us”

1 John 4:19

Prayer of thanksgiving for God’s love

God of love, we know love, because you are love. You show us what perfect love looks like. Thank you for your love for us. For the good things that you have given to us, and all that you have done for us. May we take your example of love for us, and share that love with everyone around us. Amen.

Prayer for the people you love

Dear God, I bring before you all the people who I love. My family, friends, children, parents, my spouse. Pour out your blessing upon them. May they know great joy in their lives today. May they find comfort and peace through the difficulties of life, and know that they are never alone. Thank you for bringing all of these people into my life, and for all the ways that they have changed me, and my life, for the better. Amen.

Prayer to love like Jesus

Lord, your word in the Bible shows us what love should look like. Help us to love those around us like you have loved us. Guide us in the words we say, the choices we make, and all that we do. May we love better, and love like Jesus did. May we become more devoted, more encouraging, more patient, more selfless, and more kind. Amen.

Prayer for our friendships

Father God, as well as romantic relationships, this Valentine’s Day we also pray for our friendships, and our communities. May these relationships be full of love and joy, life giving and encouraging. Show me how I should be building and investing in my community, and how I can be a Godly and loving friend. Help me also to see when a friendship is unhealthy, and help me to step back from those situations. May the communities I am part of always point people to Jesus, always lift people up, and always be a place of safety and peace. Amen.

Prayer for married couples

Creator God, you are love and you created marriage. I pray for all the married couples in my life. Strengthen and deepen these marriages. Bring these couples closer to one another, and closer to you. Where there is anger, conflict and hurt, please bring peace, comfort and unity. I also pray for all those who are currently preparing for marriage. Bless them as they plan for their wedding day and look forward to married life together. May they know you with them throughout this time, and always put you at the centre of their relationship. Amen.

Prayer for those who find Valentine’s Day hard

Dear God, we pray for each person who finds Valentine’s Day hard, and all those who are hurting. For those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Those who have been hurt by friendships and relationships. And those who feel alone. May all these people feel your presence with them this Valentine’s Day. Bring them a godly community that will support them, encourage them, and love them. Reveal to me how I could help people in my community who are struggling this Valentine’s Day. May I be your hands and feet here on Earth, sharing your love with everyone I meet. Amen.
