Arnold in long grass

Hello friends! Today I want to encourage you to pray for the conservative leadership race. Wherever you fall on the political spectrum, the current race to be leader of the Conservative Party is a big deal. We should be praying.

Whoever wins this race, will be the Prime Minister. Even if you would vote for an opposing party in the next election, we should want the best for our country right now too.

This race is to be decided by the votes of Conservative party members across the country. For many of us who aren’t party members, this means we have no say as to who will win. But, instead of feeling helpless – let’s take the time to pray.

Not sure where to start? Here are 5 different ways to pray for the conservative leadership race!

Pray for the candidates

The two remaining candidates are Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. Love them or loathe them, they both need our prayers. Not liking someone isn’t a good reason not to pray for them. Remember, the Bible even calls us to pray for those who persecute us.

Pray for their character

Take time to pray for the character of these leaders. Think about the characteristics that you would want in a good leader, and pray for those things. Pray that they will be honest. That they will have integrity. For good leadership, boldness, and courage. Pray that they will be humble, kind and compassionate.

Pray for their wellbeing

I don’t know about you, but to me, a leadership contest sounds daunting. The debates, the interviews, the campaigning. There are plenty of people who actively dislike you and want you to fail. And, we know that there are people who seek to do harm to others.

So, pray for God’s protection over these candidates. That he will keep them safe from illness and injury. That he will guard their hearts from pain, and keep them resilient in the face of stress and worry.

Pray for the process

Now we are down to the final two candidates, the eventual winner will be decided by members of the Conservative party. A fair and just process is vitally important. More important even, than who wins.

So pray for the process. For the people who are in charge of this vote. Pray that the systems in place will run smoothly and that everyone who is able, gets their say.

Pray for the voters

Whether you are one of the ones who will be voting or not, remember all those who will be voting in your prayers. Because, we can pray for them to make wise decisions. Decisions based on what is best for this country. Pray that they will think of others as much as themselves. And that they will discern good policies from bad ones too.

Pray for God’s will to be done

You may well have a candidate that you want to win. Because, you might passionately believe that they are the best person for the job. But ultimately, only God knows what is best. Therefore take time to pray for God’s will to be done – not yours.

Pray that the right leader will be chosen. Pray that God will use them. Ask God to guide them and lead them. Pray that they will follow God and be obedient to his direction.

So, let’s pray together:

Dear God, thank you for our democratic systems – for our government and for our political parties. We pray for the conservative leadership race today, and for the final two candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. Be with both of these individuals today. May they know your presence with them, and may they seek after you in all they do. Support them and lift them each up to be strong leaders. Leaders who lead with honesty, humility and compassion.

May this contest be fought fairly, and may those who vote do so with wisdom and discernment. We know that you are on your throne. You are in control. So we pray that your will be done in this situation. That the right leader will be chosen to guide this country and the Conservative party. And throughout this process, we pray that you will bless this country and all who live here, now and always. Amen.
