Books I read in August & September 2021

Hellooo, it’s been a while… and this is going to be quite a short blog post! My reading over the past few months has been really quite terrible. I had a few books at the end of July and beginning of August that just took me ages to get through, and then couldn’t quite bring myself to keep reading.

But anyway, I still wanted to let you know what books I read over these few months and what I thought of them!

The Switch by Beth O’Leary

Contemporary Fiction, 4/5 stars

I had heard a lot about Beth O’Leary before reading this book, and I definitely wasn’t expecting some of the themes that were introduced in the book quite early on. Not that these were negative, just deeper and more emotional than I was expecting. It was still an easy read and I really enjoyed the concept of a granddaughter and grandmother swapping lives. I did find the boyfriend annoying and creepy from the beginning so I never found the storyline around him very moving or interesting.

Keeper of the Light by Diane Chamberlain

Literary/Contemporary Fiction, 4/5 stars

If you’ve seen my bookish videos over on YouTube, or read many of these blog posts, you’ll know that my favourite book of all time is Before the Storm by Diane Chamberlain. This didn’t quite match that book, but I still really enjoyed Diane’s writing style which I just find so easy to read! This book follows an emergency doctor after the woman her husband loves is brought into the ER with a gunshot wound and dies of her injuries.

From here, we see the impact of this event (and of many past events that we uncover) on the doctor, her husband, and the woman’s family left behind. I found this so fascinating to see the impact of this event and of the decisions that different people made in the past.

The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter by Theodora Goss

Historical Fantasy, 5/5 stars

This was a re-read for me, and this time by audiobook. I absolutely love this series and they’re definitely my favourite books of the year so far. If you want to check out my original review from the first time I read it, you can find that here. But I loved it just as much the second time around, and the audiobooks for this series are amazing!
