The Ten Commandments were given to Moses, from God, for the Israelite people. They summarise the 613 commandments given in the Old Testament law. These are great rules that give us guidance on our relationship with God and our relationship with other people.

This week at church, our intercessions were based around praying the 10 commandments – and they even had fantastic actions! I loved this idea and it was a great way to pray through some really important issues.

Here are some ideas on how you can try praying the 10 commandments.

  1. You shall have no other Gods before me.

    Action for One

Dear God, help us to put you first. Remove all the distractions that stop us from focusing all of our attention upon you. Help us to recognise your power and majesty in the world around us. Amen.

  1. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

    Action for Two

Dear God, you are the only one who deserves our praise. Remove the things that we idolise and help us to ensure that we are not worshipping anything but you. Allow us to keep you at the forefront of our minds. Amen.

  1. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God

    Action for Three

Dear God, we know that the words we say are powerful and can have a huge impact. Help us to control the words we say and to think before we speak. Help us to not misuse your name and to value it above all other names. Show us how we can glorify your name, respect it and share it with other people. Amen.

  1. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy

Action for Four

Dear God, thank you for the rest that you provide us. Help us to take time out of our busy weeks to spend time with you. We know that we need rest, help us to keep a regular time of sabbath and to use it well. Amen.

  1. Honour your father and your mother

    Action for Five

Dear God, thank you for the people who care for me. Thank you for my family and those people who have helped me to grow and learn. Help me to care and respect each of these people. Guide the world to take better care of the elderly, stopping them from becoming isolated and lonely. Help us to remember that they have much to share with us. Amen.

  1. You shall not murder

    Action for Six

Dear God, be with those people who see murder, pain and violence as their only option. Help them to see alternative solutions and to work for peace and equality. Provide comfort and grace to those who have killed or harmed others, help them to repent and turn to you for forgiveness. Comfort those who have lost loved ones, may they know your peace and presence with them. Amen.

  1. You shall not commit adultery

    Action for Seven

Dear God, thank you for marriage. Thank you that you bring people together in love and for the commitment that they make to each other and to you. Watch over and protect these marriages. Help couples to remain focused upon you and upon each other, protect them from the temptations that try to pull them away. Help them to see the beauty in their relationship and give them the wisdom and courage to work to maintain it. Amen.

  1. You shall not steal

    Action for Eight

Dear God, thank you for all the things that you have given to us. Be with those who feel that they need to steal in order to survive. Provide them with the help and resources that they need. Bless them with people to support them and fair employment. Release those who have been stolen away from their families and forced into slavery. Bring justice for these people and a safe, free life for the victims. Amen.

  1. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

    Action for Nine

Dear God, thank you that you are the truth. Help us to remain honest, even when it takes great courage. Help us to admit our mistakes and to confess our sins before you. Guide us towards what is right and help us not to lie, whether for deception, personal gain or self-preservation. Amen.

  1. You shall not covet

    Action for Ten

Dear God, thank you for the many blessings that we receive each day from your hands. Help us to be grateful and content with the wondrous gifts we have. Keep our eyes fixed upon you, not upon the possessions of other people. Help us not to compare ourselves to other people, but to work to be who you have said we are. Amen.

I hope you like this prayer idea as much as I do! If you want to see these actions more visually, or here some ideas for how you can use this prayer idea, check out my new video here:
