One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

          Luke 11:1

In the Bible, Jesus’ disciples ask him to teach them how to pray. They had seen Jesus praying to the Father, and this is something they greatly wanted to be able to do themselves.

I don’t think I know anyone who believes they’ve got it all sorted when it comes to prayer. If you think you know enough about prayer, you probably don’t. Prayer is all about communication and developing our relationship with God. This is something we should constantly want to work on. So, how can we learn to pray?

Learn more about it

Prayer can be a confusing concept so it’s always great to seek out better ways to understand it. There are great books about prayer, there are blogs about prayer (check out my blogs about Corporate Prayer and Saying Thank You to God), there are podcasts about it and there are courses to help us understand it based on other people’s experiences. I would definitely recommend The Prayer Course and Pete Greig’s book ‘God on Mute’. Learning about prayer can be really encouraging and be a source of comfort knowing that we’re not the only ones who struggle with prayer sometimes!

Pray with others

Praying with others, whether at church, with friends, or as a family can be a hugely powerful and enlightening experience. Hearing the ways in which different people pray can help you to understand how you can pray too. Whether you’re praying out loud in a big group, or more closely in a small group, you have an opportunity to hear from other people and to get to grips with praying out loud, whilst in a safe, pressure-free environment.

Trial and error

There are so, so, so many ways that you can pray! I have found it so helpful to try many different ways of praying (check out a few here). There are so many ideas that I never would have thought up myself that I’m so glad I tried. It can also be great to get involved in lots of different types of prayer: sign up to do the intercessions at your church, attend a prayer meeting, go on a prayer retreat. Not all of these ideas will help you, but it’s a great way to teach you what does work for you.
