A - Z

Sometimes, the hardest thing about prayer is knowing where to start. Whether you have lots of things to pray for, or very few, it can seem overwhelming to just start talking to God. Personally, I find it helpful to have structure – I love structure! There are lots of different ways to add structure to your prayers, but a favourite of mine is to use the alphabet.

Going through the alphabet, you can use each letter as a prayer prompt. You can either pray for the first thing that pops into your head for that letter or plan out what you want to pray for.

Whichever way you prefer, here is a list of ideas of things to pray for, for each letter of the alphabet!

A – answered prayers (thank God for all the ways he has already answered your prayers!)

B – for more people to believe in God (check out these 5 things to pray for non-Christians)

C – crime (victims and perpetrators)

D – our daily bread (the things people need to live – clean water, food, shelter)

E – for your enemies

F – family & friends

G – guidance in your decisions

H – healing for the sick

I – ideas and inspiration

J –  for joy!

K – kids and local schools

L – leaders (in your church, your community, your country or around the world)

M – those who suffer from mental illnesses

N – victims of natural disasters (recent or a long time ago)

O – for obedience to God

P – the persecuted church

Q – the Queen and royal family

R – your relationships with other people (marriage, children, parents, friends)

S – safety and protection

T – Thank you God!

U – university students

V – victims of war and violence

W – the world that God has created

X – xylophones and other wonderful instruments we can use to make music

Y – yourself

Z – zoos and wildlife sanctuaries

Why not try using this list to help you pray or create your own! Let me know if you can think of some other great things to pray for – especially for the tricky letters!

  4. This is a great list of prompts to get you started if you can’t think what to pray for off the top of your head. I think it’s useful to have one of these, and maybe even a gratitude prompt.
