Arnold in a tree

Sometimes, we all need some encouragement in our prayer lives. Sometimes it can feel like we’re going nowhere, like we must be doing it wrong, or that God’s just not listening. Where better to turn for encouragement than the Bible? Here are 8 of my favourite bible verses about prayer to encourage you!

“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.”

– Psalm 107:28-30

I think it’s always important to remember than God does answer prayer. Often it can start to feel like none of your prayers are ever answered, but let’s refocus upon the amazing ways he does answer our prayers and how he’s answered so many peoples’ prayers for thousands of years!

“Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

– James 5:16

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 4:6-7

“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.”

– James 5:13

There are so many reasons that we need to pray: for forgiveness, for healing, for thanksgiving, for requests. God cares about all of these things. He cares when we’re in trouble and he cares if we’re happy! He cares if we’re anxious, and he wants us to lay those anxieties at his feet.

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

– Matthew 26:41

Another reason we need to pray is to avoid the temptations that are all around us. We are all still human, all flawed and we need God to help us through.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

– 1 John 5:14

“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

– Matthew 7:11

Have confidence! God hears our prayers, and wants to listen, answer and help us. He WANTS to give us good gifts. Hold onto this fact and remember you are not begging to a cruel dictator but asking a loving father!
