I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
    I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

– Psalm 9:1

Sometimes it’s easy, when we pray, to get caught up in all the things we want from God, or need his help with and forget about all the things we need to say thank you for.

Of course, asking God for help, for healing, for wisdom – all these things are hugely important but they should not come at the expense of saying thank you to God for what he has already done for us!

Whether it’s gratitude for things that God has created, things that he’s blessed us with or prayers he’s already answered; praying our thanks to God is so important and helps us to really focus our attention on how wonderful and powerful God really is.

An interesting challenge I heard recently was to imagine if tomorrow you woke up with only the things you had thanked God for today. What would you have? Would you have your family? Your house? Your friends? Your food?

Something I’ve started doing recently is keeping a gratitude journal. Each week I write down three things I’m really grateful for – whether it’s people, things that have happened, things I’ve accomplished, or things around me. Taking this time to just think about all that I’m grateful for and saying thank you to God for it has really helped me to focus on all the wonderful things God has done.

So my challenge to you is this: think about what if tomorrow you only woke up with what you thanked God for today?

Dear God, thank you for everything that you have given me. Thank you for my friends, my family, my home, my owner, all the good things you have blessed me with. Help me to remember all the things you have done for me and to constantly thank you for them. Amen
