For those of you with elephant-like memories may remember way back in March I wrote a blog about 5 Feminine Attributes of God to celebrate Mother’s Day in the UK! As tomorrow is Father’s Day it only seems fair that we explore 5 Masculine Attributes of God too.
As I said before, none of these attributes are purely male or female, I have simply split them based on attributes that are stereotypically understood to be masculine or feminine.
Strength, both natural and supernatural, is mentioned in the Bible over 360 times, talking about both God and people on earth. We see God’s strength and power demonstrated in the way that he creates and destroys in the Old Testament as well as the way he heals, performs miracles and raises from the dead in the New Testament.
“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
– Job 42:2
God is also the source of our strength, enabling us to do all that we can do.
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
– Philippians 4:13
Throughout the Bible we see examples of God’s justice and mercy for people. He is fair and upholds the law when such a law is just. He doesn’t punish unfairly or for things we have not done.
“You are righteous, Lord, and your laws are right.”
– Psalm 119:137
“For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them”
– Isaiah 61:8
We read in the Bible that the Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is unchanging and always remains the same. This is brilliant because we can know God through his actions, through his words and not be concerned about him changing his ways. This makes him reliable and trustworthy to keep his promises.
“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”
– Malachi 3:6
“But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”
– Psalm 102:27
Throughout the Bible we see so many examples of when God has protected his people, promising that he will always be there protecting them from both physical and spiritual adversaries.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
– Deuteronomy 31:6
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
– 1 Corinthians 10:13
I realise that fatherly traits open up a whole new list of possible attributes, some of which I’ve already mentioned. But God calls himself our father, and us his children. He cares for us like a parent.
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will”
– Ephesians 1:4-5
“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him”
– Psalm 103:13
He is compassionate like a father, honest, patient, reliable, caring and much more.
